In the midst of this unprecedented pandemic, it can feel like we are immersed in unavoidable unknowns. Having a guiding principle can serve a vital function in our daily lives by helping us to stay focused on what we can do, regardless of how ‘out of control’ we may feel. Creating something like a mission statement for how you want to get through this Coronavirus pandemic serves as a guiding North Star by which we can focus our attention and efforts.
For example:
To avoid only focusing on the scary and negative topics, try to adopt a posture of intentionally trying to see the whole picture, including the things that still bring you joy. This small expansion of focus results in observing the positives as well. Spring flowers, the YouTube series ‘Some Good News’ with John Krasinski, or appreciating the first-responders and hospital staff taking care of the sick are all counter balances to the negative news stories.
Or maybe you want to focus on taking care of yourself in new ways, giving yourself space and permission to notice and process the variety of emotions this pandemic is evoking. What emotions do you feel? Where do you feel them in your body? Practicing deep, circular breathing, even for just a moment, can really calm the nervous system and help you manage these big emotions.
What do you want your story to be from this season of life? What mission statement, or mantra, can you keep in mind to help you find peace, or continue to live out your values? Maybe you just want to focus on practicing one word like gratitude, patience, or self-compassion; whatever you decide, having a thoughtful North Star will help get you through these extraordinary times.
